The "Instituto de Mercados de Barcelona", which belongs to the City Council of Barcelona, decided to drive a plan in order to rehabilitate and to value the markets, among we find Santa Caterina, which plays an important role in the recuperation plan of the district that was in decline and where this market was one of the most important projects of the plan. It was the first covered market of the city, built in 1848 over the convent of Santa Caterina that once it was knocked down, the land passed to the council who built the market. Nowadays we can visit the apse that was conserved. The architect Miralles who was born in the neighborhood, died when the work was finished.

The stunning and colorful cover is like a sea of fruit, through the use of diferent and bright colors. It was designed by Toni Comellà, becoming in the main building attraction and in a unique piece.
